The Summer of 2007 brought with it the super catchy and super sexual Hapuya like that. Released by industry newcomer Morachi, the song was expected to launch the musician into the big leagues. He released one more song; No Dull and did a remix with Sauce Kid and Gino but that was the end of him in the Nigerian music scene. He recently resurfaced a few weeks ago with Fire Down; a song with a sound that Nigerians have outgrown.
Gino released No be God? in 2006 and it was arguably Nigeria’s best rap song for a long while. The talented rapper released an album later, but his musical career went to waste.
Same with Bigiano. He released Shayo and disappeared.

Same with Klever Jay. Igboro Ti Daru featured Eedris Abdulkareem and went on to become a summer anthem, but the musician did not make a showing after that.

Released in 2008, Collabo by Deebee was one of the most talked about singles in the streets as well as on the turntables of Deejays all around Nigeria.
So, what really makes people One Hit Wonders? How do these people enter the public spotlight and subsequently disappear?
I think it’s the record labels. They get an artist that seems likeable, pay for a couple of studio sessions and then push the resulting singles out to the public. They then use Payola to push the music out for Nigerians to consume.

Payola, in the music industry, is the illegal practice of payment or other inducements by record companies for the broadcast of recordings on commercial radio in which the song is presented as being part of the normal day’s broadcast. Under U.S. law, a radio station can play a specific song in exchange for money, but this must be disclosed on the air as being sponsored airtime, and that play of the song should not be counted as a “regular airplay”.

The term has come to refer to any secret payment made to cast a product in a favourable light (such as obtaining positive reviews).

Some radio stations report spins of the newest and most popular songs to industry publications. The number of times the songs are played can influence the perceived popularity of a song.

The term payola is a combination of “pay” and “-ola” a common suffix of product names in the early 20th century, such as Pianola, Victrola, Amberola, Crayola, Rock-Ola or brands such as the radio equipment manufacturer Motorola. Payola has come to mean the payment of a bribe in commerce and in law to say or do a certain thing against the rules of law, but more specifically a commercial bribe. – Source, Wikipedia

When the agreements between artist and record label end or artist couldn’t pay to push out hits like they did the first time, they died down as a brand. In the absence of quality lyrics or personal mystery, every other musician sounds the same. Music and media in Nigeria has been designed in a way where out of sight means out of mind.
Or maybe they got lazy. They got all the fame, they got all the glory and they just slowed down. Either way, E go be.

Acting President made a quick dash to and from London last night for a meeting with the ailing President Muhammadu Buhari.
We have seen a video of him leaving the Abuja House in London where President Buhari is supposedly recuperating.
We have also seen that the Acting President is truly back in Nigeria as he was there to chair today’s Federal Executive Meeting.

But what we don’t still know is why the Acting President really had to make the London trip and what they discussed.
Mr Laolu Akande, the Acting President’s special adviser on media and publicity promised to share the details of the meeting almost 20 hours ago.

Etisalat, the youth-centric mobile network that came with a lot of buzz in the hope of transforming the communications industry in Nigeria is no more.
After its problems with loans, debt financing and disgruntled Arab investors, what we now have is 9Mobile. The trading company, EMTS, had indeed tried to retain the brand name ‘Etisalat’ presumably to retain the confidence of its customers that nothing had changed. That request was turned down, so 9Mobile it is.

It is a name that has not really gone down well with many. While some opine that it does not sound ‘mature’ enough, others have made an association that the relationship between numbers four, one, and nine make the telcos name suspect. A different group just think it is too close to the names of many gambling sites.

No other mobile network in Nigeria, past or present, has made use of a combination of numbers and letters in its name. But does EMTS really care about the name? Of all the things that may have bothered them about this transition, it would not be possible to argue that a name was the most difficult to choose.
While they were Etisalat, there was the focus by the company to focus on Nigerianness. This focus, perhaps, led to their choosing the 0809 dialing code at inception, to make the phonetic connection between the sound from pronouncing the first two alphabets of ‘Nigeria’ and the number 9. Arguably, it made them easily relatable to young Nigerians; there was a flow to the Etisalat culture of “080 9ja for life”.
Whether or not they were delivering the service as desired by customers is a different matter (which is not necessarily particular to them).
9Mobile, by popular acclaim, is not the best of names in the industry right now, and it may take a while to catch on. It is a mistake to think that names do not matter, considering that the youth population are becoming more sensitive to identifiers.

That said, the new company will not fail because it is called ‘9Mobile’. If this were a piece of encouragement to them, there is a mobile telecoms company called T-Mobile; if 9Mobile is half as good, they may finally get a real deal with FC Barcelona and have their names on their team jerseys.
Names have weights, but there is no guarantee that anyone whose name is Festus will be first amongst equals. 9Mobile, do your thing.

Following the last episode of the Minstrel TV show on DoveTv SPECIAL Program Anchored by Mr. Olumide Odesanya, featuring the show Guest Artiste, Obiefule Sylvia, We bring a concise and detailed account of the Show to you here on the internet(social media).
The show is tagged ‘special’ due to the logical dimension used in broadcasting it, in which the Mentoring segment which usually last the program was brought to the first segment and also the topic of the segment which is ‘Positive Word’ contributed to the tagging of the program as a special one.
The Guest for the mentoring segment, Pastor Okiki Adewale meticulously analyzed the topic and made it apparent to the viewers at home. According to him, “Words coming out of the mouth can bring forth blessing and also bring out Sword from its sack. Some people are in difficulties due to the negative utterance they make to themselves when in challenges. Ministers of God should always watch what they say while amidst mates or gentiles. Words from the mouth can put one in bondage or set one free, in this case every individual should be mindful of his/her speech.”
At the second segment of this edition which is Profile segment, the Guest artiste was introduced as Obiefile Sylvia. A woman with great passion for music and the doings of God, and also a member of Evergreen Musical group for the past two years. According to her, “the Gospel group is the best and a special one to me…. And as a married woman, my husband as been a supportive pillar and strong back bone to my music ministry through the past years and still counting.” She also added when asked, that her single “Onye ga Emere mu” is dedicated to the faithfulness of God and the healing miracle God bestowed on her by cleansing her from a diseases.
The third segment which use to be the second in other episodes of the Minstrels TvShow, at which a topic is been analyzed and viewers can also call in to be part of the discussion started with an apparent meaning of Spiritual songs, which was the topic for the segment and was literarily explained by Sylvia as “A way to connect positively to heaven and emboss positive impact in hearts of both listeners and the minister”. One of the call in audience also contributed to Sylvia’s explanation saying “its a song that makes individual’s heart connected to God’s heart”. In addition, the anchor and the guest artiste also delved into the other sides of spiritual songs for maniac spirits or demonic beings, explaining its root in our society and its impact or side clash with Gospel world or music. Furthermore, the artiste added that the music ministers should not conform themselves with worldly standard so as not to loose the taste of spirituality and provoke God from our self-ivoked spiritual songs that does not have any reflection of heaven presence or God’s divine message. The anchor, Olumide Odesanya, also added that the music we have now has gone afar from the stillness of God and has mindlessly grown into heavy lyrically composed noise, and has also distracted Individuals expecting songs of spiritual standard into listening to the so Called jingled and emphasized noise. Sylvia taking the cup from him to drink, added that the bible also recorded that, at the end time, abnormal and devastated manners will grow and over shadow humans heart and this might be the cause of the noise called spiritual songs we think we have In this generation. Both after all concluded that music ministers should also remember the flavour of God and Celestial recipes that will ignite spiritual standard and emotions to glorify God on earth.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has faulted the methods employed in the war against corruption.
He said the country was only dealing with symptoms of corruption whereas “corruption is like a tree”.
The speaker said this on Thursday when a delegation from the fiscal responsibility commission (FRC) visited him in Abuja, TheCable reports.

The speaker said Nigeria earns interest on foreign reserves like Botswana but the country has such interest as its second highest revenue source after natural resources.

He, therefore, wondered why the Central Bank of Nigeria does not declare interests accruing on the foreign reserves accounts of the federation even after the house had passed a resolution calling it to do so in December 2015.
“In Nigeria, we have been asking the question, are we earning or are we just running charity with it or just leave people to manage it,” the speaker said.
“From the way we are fighting corruption, it is like emphasis is built on EFCC, but the problem with that approach that you are dealing with the symptoms of corruption.
“Once you continue to deal with the leaves and the fruits, and the root is still there, you cannot totally eliminate corruption.

“These are preventive agencies and we ought to invest more in agencies such as the Fiscal Responsibility Commission because we have to make it difficult for corruption itself to take place. Once we do that, we will be applying the remedy at the root of corruption.
“There is no limit to the kind of attention we can pay to agencies like this, because this is the right way to combat corruption itself to ensure that resources are efficiently allocated and that we have fiscal discipline.”
